Compassion Is Key When It Comes to Addiction
For many years scientists, doctors, and psychologists have studied those who abuse drug and alcohol. What makes them addicted? What is the best way to stop addiction? It all comes down to a never ending war on drugs. However, what if we stopped seeing the war on drugs as a war? According to Johann Hari who currently did a segment on TED Talks, he believes that we should be more loving to those who struggle with addiction instead of shaming them.
Proof: The Study in Portugal
Society has a misconception about drug and alcohol abusers. It is a misconception that they are helpless and that a more aggressive tactic to stopping their addictions would be more beneficial to their health. However, studies from the year 2000 based in Portugal showed that’s not the case. Looking at the study, about 1% of the population in Portugal was addicted to heroin alone. Most of those who were heroin abusers were incarcerated or shamed and isolated from their society. A new approach was adapted by a Dr. João Goulão who sought to decriminalize all drugs and use the money that was used to punish these abusers for a greater cause, socializing them. By creating jobs for those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, giving them reasons to get up in the morning, and overall equal treatment, the percentage of those who were addicted dropped 50% within 15 years.
Show Some Sympathy
In other words, we have to stop building barriers for those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. There are plenty of studies that show that most of those who are addicted are isolated, have nothing to look forward to on a daily basis, and are shunned for their mistakes. If we can take the time to reconsider and sympathize with substance abusers, there just may be a better outcome. That is what we aim to do at United Drug Rehab Group.
